WHITTIER, Calif. - An impressive number of Whittier College student-athletes were again recognized for their work in the classroom. The Poets placed 124 student-athletes on the SCIAC's annual All-Academic team, the conference announced on Thursday.
Of the 124 individuals to earn the recognition, six student-athletes earned the All-Academic distinction in two sports to give the Poets 118 roster spots on the annual team.
In order to earn the distinction of SCIAC All-Academic, an individual had to hold a 3.4 cumulative GPA or higher as of the end of the 2016-17 academic school year. Women's Soccer led the department getting more than half of their roster on the team with 13, while Women's Swimming & Diving and Football each had 12 recipients.
Volleyball and Baseball were in a close third with 11 athletes being recognized.
A 3.0 overall G.P.A. was acquired once again for the second straight semester by the 22 athletic programs. On the women's side, they finished with an overall 3.16 (up from a 3.14 in the Fall of 2016), while the men totaled a 2.82.
11 teams had over a 3.0 with nine coming from the women and two on the men. The top five teams included Women's Swimming & Diving (3.51), Women's Soccer (3.47), Women's Volleyball (3.46), Women's Golf (3.43), and Men's Soccer (3.33).
Women's Basketball was in a close 6th with a 3.26 and Women's Cross-Country would add a 3.22 in 7th.
Other sports that achieved a 3.0 or higher included Women's Track & Field (3.07), Baseball (3.07), Softball (3.02), and Women's Water Polo (3.02).
