Whittier College Intramural Rules

Statement of Purpose: The rules for Intramurals are designed to provide an opportunity for everyone to participate in balanced and fair competition.

I. Eligibility

-Only current Whittier College students, faculty, and staff shall be eligible to compete in Intramural sports.

-Competition will be open for both men and women.

-Contestants may not represent more than one team in any sport. Minimum disciplinary action for a contestant playing on more than one team is suspension in the division where the violation occurs for the remainder of that sport.

-Any team that allows an ineligible player to play will forfeit the game(s) in which the ineligible player participates.

-Student-athletes who currently participate in intercollegiate sports at the college are restricted from playing in their sport. (Ex. Football players cannot participate in flag-football.) However, seniors who have completed their last season of intercollegiate eligibility may participate in their sport if their intercollegiate sport has officially ended.

II. Competition

-Team sport tournaments shall be conducted on a round robin basis with single elimination play-offs.

-Teams may or may not automatically qualify for play-offs, depending on the quantity of teams participating.

III. Entries

-Entries shall be received on appropriate official entry forms at Intramural Director's office prior to 9pm on the closing date of registration.

-Entries for each sport shall close on the date specified on the flyer. (Late entries may be accepted only if space is available.)

IV. Scheduling

-League schedules shall be prepared and made available before the first contest in league play. Play-offs will begin immediately after league play. Check at the Intramural Office or online for playoff schedules.

-All competitions are scheduled in the evenings to avoid class and dinner conflicts and allow as many students to participate as possible.

V. Forfeits

-Teams or individuals not ready to play within 10 minutes after the scheduled time for the contest will lose by forfeit.

-Teams arriving late for a scheduled contest, but within the 10 minute forfeit time, will be assessed a penalty according to the sport rules.

VI. Team Captains

-Each team entry will choose a team captain. Team captains are responsible for attending a team captain's meeting prior to the start of each sport, where scheduling, rules and other issues will be discussed. If a team captain cannot attend said meeting, he or she must send a representative from his or her team.

-In general, team captains will serve as the communicators between their teams and the Intramural Director and Staff. Issues that may arise concerning eligibility, rules, outcomes, etc. should be communicated by the team captain to the Director of Intramurals.

VII. Equipment & Dress

-Most equipment necessary for participation in intramurals will be provided by the Athletic Department. Please refer to specific sport rules to determine if personal gear is needed.

-Appropriate athletic footwear must be worn in intramural contests. Any shoes that could possibly endanger another participant are prohibited. Please refer to specific sport rules to determine appropriate footwear.

-All visible jewelry should be either removed or covered to compete in Intramural team sports. It is the participants responsibility to remove or cover the jewelry. Intramural staff will not provide tape or bandages for this purpose. The removal of all jewelry is strongly encourage when participating in Intramural activities.

-Any person wearing glasses or contact lenses takes responsibility for injury or loss during a contest.

VIII. Rules of Personal Conduct

 -Any person who commits, attempts to commit, incites or aids others in committing any of the following acts of misconduct shall be subject to disciplinary procedures by the Director of Intramurals:

1.Player verbally abuses an official or participant.
2. Threatening behavior (verbal or physical) toward a player or spectator.
3. Player or spectator makes physical contact in a threatening manner (battery) toward another player or spectator.
4. Threatening behavior (verbal or physical) toward an official.
5. Player or spectator makes physical contact in a threatening manner (battery) toward an official.

-Entry on a team and participation in any intramural competition requires the participating student to abide by these rules of conduct.
