Baseball loses lead to Greensboro, Chapman '10 allows one run in five innings

Kevin Chapman '10 allowed one earned run on five hits and struck out five batters in five innings pitched, but Greensboro College came from behind to the Poets 7-5 on February 4 at Memorial Baseball Field.  The loss drops the Poets' record to 0-4.

Robbie Smith '08 went 2-for-4 on the day with an RBI and a double.  Ty Crawford '07 was 2-for-2 with a double.  Ryan Martin '08 hit a solo home run (1) and Bobby Wooldridge '08 and Lorenzo Lopez '09 each drove in a run.  Scot Kakuk '08 (0-1) was credited with the loss after pitching two-thirds of an inning and allowing two runs, one earned and walking two in the top of the ninth inning.

The Poets got on the scoreboard first, with Martin's solo home run in the bottom of the first.  Greensboro answered back with a run to tie the score in the top half of the third inning and took the lead with another run in the sixth.  The score was 2-2 going into the eighth inning, when Greensboro added two runs in the top half, followed by the Poets taking a 5-4 lead with three runs in the bottom of the eighth.  In the top of the ninth, the Poets walked the bases loaded and hit a batter to bring home the tying run.  Two fielding errors brought home two more runs for Greensboro to give them a 7-5 lead.  Looking for a final inning rally, the Poets left two men on base in the ninth inning.  Whittier left 12 men on the base paths in the game.

The Poets are on the road for their next contest at Azusa Pacific University on February 6.  First pitch is scheduled for 6pm.
