Baseball beats Dominican in extra innings, Taiariol '08 hits game-winning single

Nick Taiariol '08 went 4-for-5 with the
game-winning RBI to lead Whittier College to a 4-3 victory over
visiting Dominican University (IL) in ten innings at Memorial
Baseball Field on March 5. The Poets are now 6-10 this
season.
Matt Morgado '07 went 4-for-5 for the
Poets. He drove in a run and tripled before scoring the
game-winning run. Trevor Bormann '10 drove
in a pair of runs. Ryan Martin '10 went
2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Matt Schwarz
'07 started on the mound and allowed just one run on four
hits in seven innings pitched. Kevin Chapman
'10 (1-0) was credited with the win after pitching two and
two-thirds innings of hitless relief. He also struck out
three batters.
Dominican got on the scoreboard first with a run in the top half
of the second inning. The Poets took the lead in the sixth
inning with Bormann's two-run single that scored Taiariol and
Robbie Smith '08. Martin doubled and scored
in the seventh to give the Poets a 3-1 lead. A Poet error led
to two runs for Dominican in the eighth inning to tie the
score. Neither team was able to score in the ninth and in the
bottom of the tenth, Morgado tripled to lead off the inning.
A pair of intentional walks loaded the bases for Whittier bringing
Taiariol to the plate. He singled to right field, scoring
Morgado and ending the game, 4-3.
The Poets take on Dominican again to lead off the California
Classic hosted by Whittier on March 9. First pitch is
scheduled for 9am.
