Baseball above .500 with sweep of Caltech, Poets earn double-digit wins in all three games


Thomas Phelps '09 won his fifth game of the season with a five inning, one-hit outing to lead Whittier College to a game one victory as the Poets swept the California Institute of Technology in a three-game series on March 30 and 31.  The Poets (11-18, 7-5 SCIAC) won 23-1 in game one in Pasadena, Calif. and took both games in the day two doubleheader at Memorial Baseball Field 10-0 and 22-2, respectively.

In the seven-inning game one at Caltech, Phelps (5-2) allowed no runs on one hit and no walks while striking out a career-high eleven batters in five innings pitched.  Patrick Martin '10 went 2-for-2 with a two-run homer (1), four RBI total and two runs scored.  Mike Benavente '09 hit a grand slam, his second home run this season.  Kody Seminara '08 went 2-for-3 with a triple, two RBI and a run scored.  Pete Gonzalez '10 came off the bench and went 3-for-3 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored.  Blake Coddington '09 drove in a pair of runs and scored two more.  Robbie Smith '08 and Ben Cohon '10 each drove in two runs.  Ryan Martin '08 went 3-for-3 with a double and three runs scored.

In game two of the series, Blake Luitweiler '07 (3-3) started on the hill and pitched five innings allowing no runs and just two hits while striking out six batters.  Ty Crawford '07 hit his team-leading fourth home run of the season and finished with three RBI.  Ryan Martin went 2-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored.  Matt Morgado '07 went 2-for-3 with a double, one RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base.  Bobby Wooldridge '08 went 3-for-3 with a stolen base and a run scored.  Jason Surat '08, Robert Pachuca '10, Smith and Seminara each drove in a run. 

In the series finale, Cohon led the Poets with a triple, four RBI and two runs scored.  Morgado drove in a pair of runs, stole a base and scored three times.  Pachuca went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.  Smith also drove in two runs and scored another.  Wooldridge went 2-for-2 at the plate with a walk and three runs scored.  Ryan Martin finished with two stolen bases and two runs scored.  He leads the team with ten stolen bases on ten attempts this season.  Justin Armijo '10 (4-3) pitched five innings and allowed one earned run on three hits and no walks.  He struck out five batters.

The Poets are in action again on April 13 when they begin a three game series with SCIAC rival California Lutheran University, in Thousand Oaks, Calif.  The series continues at Memorial Baseball Stadium with a doubleheader on April 14.
