Baseball Loses Two of Three in East Bay

Whittier College baseball got their first win of the season in game one of a three-game series with California State University, East Bay on February 16 and 17.  The Poets lost the following two games, however, as their season record falls to 1-6-1 overall.

In the 6-2 victory in game one, Robbie Smith '08 went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.  Chuck Acker '08 singled, drove in a run, stole a base and scored.  Anthony Cappelletti '09 and Brian Carmona '10 each had a pair of hits.  John Fugazi '09 tripled and scored a run.

Solid pitching gave the Poets the game one win.  Blake Luitwieler '08 started on the hill and pitched six strong innings, allowing just four hits and one run.  He also struck out four batters.  Kevin "Fungo" Pigott '10 was credited with his first save of the season after pitching 2.1 innings of shutout baseball, allowing just one hit and striking out three.

The Poets picked up seven hits in game two, but were only able to get one run across the plate.  Acker drove in the only run of the game for Whittier with a groundout in the fourth inning.  Fugazi went 2-for-4 with a double, stolen base and a run scored.  Riley Bateman '08 and Nick Taiariol '08 each doubled.

Justin Armijo '09 got the start and the loss, but pitched a solid 6.1 innings.  He allowed three runs on eight hits and two walks.  Mark Canner '08 pitched an inning of relief and allowed just one hit.

In the third game of the series, the Poets held an 8-4 lead going into the bottom of the eighth.  But four runs in the eighth and one in the bottom of the ninth gave East Bay the series.  Fugazi was on fire at the plate, going 5-for-5 with five singles and a run scored.  Three Poets hit home runs in the game; Ryan Martin '08 hit a two-run shot in the sixth, Carmona jacked a solo homer in the seventh and Cappelletti hit a three-run bomb in the eighth.  Taiariol finished with a double, an RBI and two runs scored.  Smith also drove in and scored a run.

On the mound, Thomas Phelps '09 pitched seven innings and allowed two earned runs, four overall, on seven hits and two walks.  He struck out eight batters, but didn't figure into the decision.

The Poets begin SCIAC play on February 29, when they travel to Pasadena, Calif., to take on Caltech.  The game is scheduled to start at 2:30pm.  The day two doubleheader from Memorial Field on March 1 begins at 11:00am.
