Poets fall twice to Sagehens

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Pomona-Pitzer Colleges, the No. 3 team in the country, completed the series sweep of the Whittier College baseball team on Saturday afternoon, 16-5 and 10-5, at Alumni Field in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader.

The Poets (10-21, 4-8 SCIAC) were led offensively by Reed Tuttle and Michael Benavente who each had four hits for the day. Tuttle went 2-for-5 in both games and Benavente went 1-for-5 in the first game and 3-for-4 in the second game which includes a homerun.

The Sagehens jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings in Game 1 and added seven more runs in the fifth and sixth inning to put the game out of reach.

In Game 2 the Poets scored one run in the top of the first inning and added five runs in each the third and fourth inning. WC tacked on fours in the sixth inning but that was as close as it would get.

The Poets used six pitchers on the afternoon.  Mike Hachadorian and Mike Reuda were tagged with the losses.

Anthony Cappelletti was held hitless in Game 1 but managed a 1-for-4 effort in the second game.

The Poets return to action on Saturday, April 18, as they hit the road to take on Redlands in a SCIAC game at 3 p.m.
