WHITTIER, Calif. – The bleachers have been installed, ADA accessible ramps and viewing has been added, and the gateway to Hugh B. Mendez Stadium and Adam Elberg Field has begun as the renovations to the Whittier College Baseball Field continue to move forward.
In addition to the updates the project to add the three-tunnel batting cages, bullpens, and lighting has also started down the left field line and the pressbox has been fully equipped with power, lighting, and a built in table.
A gift from alumnus Adam Elberg '91 will support the renovations, as well as provide for a new entrance gateway to the field from the parking lot down the right field line, and a covered, three-tunnel batting cage, including lights and bullpens down the left field line. In acknowledgement of Adam's leadership support, the playing field will be renamed Adam Elberg Field.
Thanks to a leadership gift from Keith Gendreau '80 and his wife Allison, the 2017-18 Poet Baseball squad and its fans will enjoy a new stadium, complete with a permanent grandstand, press box, and surround sound PA system. Keith and Allison's gift will name the new stadium structure in memory of former Whittier College coach and educator, Hugh B. Mendez. Coach Mendez was inducted into the Purple & Gold Hall of Fame in 2014. This gift will further preserve Mendez's legacy at Whittier and serve as a constant reminder of the impact he had on hundreds of students.
