WHITTIER, Calif. – Junior's Alex Baez (Chino Hills, Calif.) and Brandon Mulrooney (Placentia, Calif.) got their 2018 season underway in impressive fashion both being selected to the D3baseball.com Team of the Week announced Tuesday.
Baez, a starting pitcher single handily led the Poets Baseball team to a victory over Willamette University 9-0. He was near perfect in his first start of the 2018 season. He was nursing an injury leading up to the game but came out strong throwing a complete game shutout, holding the Bearcats to just four hits, while recording double digit strikeouts (10).
Mulrooney, a centerfielder who is coming off SCIAC Athlete of the Week honors put together a great four-game stretch. He batted .462 with six hits, which included a double and a home run. He collected seven RBIs and scored seven times, walked three times, had an OB% of .588 and slugged .769. In the outfield he was perfect with a 1.000 fielding percentage with 19 put outs.
Whittier returns to the diamond this weekend as they open Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play with a three game series with Occidental College. They travel on Friday, February 16 to take on the Tigers and then host them for a doubleheader the very next day, Saturday, February 17 with first pitches slated for 11:00am and 2:00pm.
