Football Loses SCIAC Game on the Road, Poets Score 19 Second Half Points


Josh Scurlock '08 threw two second half touchdown passes, but Whittier College was unable to come back from a 21-6 halftime deficit in their 28-25 loss to Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on October 28.

Scurlock finished with 229 passing yards and three touchdown throws, completing 20 of 28 passes with one interception.  Albert Williams '08 had six receptions for 77 yards and two touchdowns.  Shawn Briggs '08 caught nine passes for 78 yards.  He leads the team with 33 receptions this season.  Kevin Cullina '08 had three receptions for 29 yards and Drew Southern '09 had a 32-yard touchdown reception.  Jacob Limon '08 rushed for his third touchdown this season.

On the defensive side of the ball, Chris Tarver '08 led the way with eight tackles and a forced fumble.  Dustin Jones '07 and Ruben Chavez '07 each intercepted a pass and Mike Vara '09 recovered a fumble. 

The Stags started the scoring with a 48-yard touchdown run with 7:49 remaining in the first quarter.  A 57-yard touchdown pass gave them an early 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.  In the second quarter, Claremont struck from long range again, this time a 67-yard touchdown pass with 8:11 left in the first half.  The Poets got on the scoreboard with 30 seconds left in the half on a 6-yard pass from Scurlock to Williams.  A missed extra point left the score 21-6 into the break.

Whittier fought their way back into the game in the second half.  After Jones' interception, the Poets went on a ten-play, 49-yard drive that ended with Scurlock finding Williams again, this time for a 15-yard touchdown with 7:56 left in the third quarter.  The extra point was blocked to make the score 21-12.   Limon's 2-yard touchdown run cut the Stags' lead to three with just 3:52 remaining in the game.  The ensuing two-point conversion failed for the Poets to keep the score 21-18.  Claremont answered back just over a minute later with yet another big play; a 64-yard touchdown run to extend their lead to 28-18.  Whittier came back with a big play of their own when Scurlock found Southern for a 32-yard touchdown catch with 1:47 left to make the score 28-25.  The Poets were unable to recover an on-side kick and Claremont ran the clock out to take the 28-25 victory.

Next week the Poets are back at the friendly confines of Memorial Stadium for their final home game this season.  They take on SCIAC rival Redlands on November 4 at 7pm.
