Football Loses in Season Finale, Poets Give up 20 points in 4th Quarter

Whittier College held a 30-14 lead after three quarters, but it
slipped away in the final stanza as the Poets lost 34-30 to
Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference leader,
Occidental College on November 11. The Poets finish their
season 2-7 overall and 1-5 in SCIAC play.
Josh Scurlock '08 completed 21 of 42 passes
for 239 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.
Albert Williams '08 caught eight passes for 77
yards. Shawn Briggs '08 finished with seven
receptions for 99 yards and a touchdown. Anthony
Pomponio '09 and Jacob Limon '08 each had
a rushing touchdown.
On the defensive side of the ball, Arlo Castelo
'09 led the way with 7.5 tackles. Dustin
Jones '07 had five tackles and recovered a fumble.
Jared Izidoro '08 had two sacks and an
interception. Chasen Eddow '08 had a sack
and an interception. Sean Kuhn '09 added a
sack and Donovan Maloney '09 had an
interception.
The Poets forced an Occidental turnover on the first possession of
the game and capitalized on their ensuing possession with a 31-yard
field goal by Ben Walker '09. It was the
only score of the first quarter to give Whittier a 3-0 lead.
In the second quarter, the Tigers scored two touchdowns early, both
on three-yard runs, to take a 14-3 lead with 11:43 left in the
half. Limon's touchdown run cut the Occidental lead to four
at halftime.
The Poets dominated the third quarter, taking a 17-14 lead with
12:18 left on Pomponio's four-yard touchdown run. Scurlock
found Matt Reaber '09 in the end-zone for a
31-yard touchdown pass four minutes later to extend the lead to
ten. Whittier added another in the third, this time Scurlock
found Briggs for a 41-yard strike. 30-14 Poets as they
entered the final quarter. Occidental fought back into the
game with a 12-yard touchdown pass that capped a 15-play, 86-yard
drive. With 6:44 remaining, the Tigers struck again, this
time from 15 yards out to cut the Poets' lead to two.
Occidental took the lead with 3:42 left in the game on a 13-yard
touchdown pass. The Poets' final possession ended with one
minute remaining when a Scurlock pass was intercepted sealing the
34-30 victory for the Tigers.
