Seven Poet Football Players Honored by SCIAC

Seven Whittier College football players were honored by the
Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for their
performances during the 2007 season. Three Poets were named
to first teams.
Senior quarterback Josh Scurlock was a first team offensive
selection. He led the conference in total offense with 2639
yards and was fourth in the conference in both passing and rushing
yards.
Senior defensive lineman Daniel Lopez and junior linebacker Arlo
Castelo were named to the first team defense. Lopez finished with
15 tackles and a sack this season while anchoring the defensive
line on a defense that was third in the conference in run
defense. Castelo led the Poets defense with 79 tackles and
five sacks. He was third in the conference in tackles, tied
for the conference lead in forced fumbles and fourth in tackles for
a loss.
Senior wide receiver Shawn Briggs and his classmate, offensive
lineman Chris Anderson, were second team offense honorees.
Briggs led the SCIAC in scoring and was second in the conference
with 6.56 receptions per game. He was also third with 82
receiving yards per game. Poet co-captain Anderson anchored
an offensive line that led a Whittier rushing attack that was third
in the SCIAC with 144 yards per game.
Senior linebacker Jared Izidoro and junior safety Sean MacNeil were
named to the second team defense. Izidoro was second on the
team with 61 tackles and 5.5 tackles for a loss this season.
He was eleventh in the conference in tackles. MacNeil
finished the season with 55 tackles, the third leading tackler for
the Poets and 15th in the conference.
