Poets place 11 on All-Academic Team
LOS ANGELES - The Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced its 2008 All-Academic Football Team on Wednesday, March 18, and 11 Whittier College football players garnered a spot on the team.
The team was made up of 87 student-athletes from the seven participating SCIAC schools. The University of Redlands had a conference-high 18 student-athletes named to the team.
The Poets were represented by four offensive and seven defensive players.
Linebackers Brandon Boehm, Jared Cato and David Taylor were joined by defensive backs Travis Driskell and Matt Gocke and defensive linemen Dane Costa and Ryan Kirpatrick for the defense.
The offense was highlighted by wide receivers Shawn Briggs, David Harpster and Richie Hoover and quarterback Matthew Castaneda.
Boehm was named to the second-team all-conference defense at the end of the season while Kirkpatrick and Briggs were each honorable-mention all-conference performers.
To be eligible for the All-Academic Team a student-athlete must hold a 3.2 grade point average or higher and have started in at least one-game during the season.
Pomona-Pitzer (16), Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (15), Occidental (12), La Verne (9) and Cal Lutheran (6) make up the rest of the team.
