Ryan Jirgl has joined the Whittier College coaching staff and brings with him an experienced background from a number of different football programs. Entering his sixth coaching season, Jirgl has had the opportunity to coach at all levels, beginning at high school and up through Division I.
Jirgl arrived at Whittier College after spending the 2015 season with Division 1 Florida International University (FIU) in Miami, FL where he worked closely with the linebackers. He was responsible for organizing and executing all day to day tasks and responsibilities on the defensive side of the ball, while working hand in hand with Defensive Coordinator Matt House and Secondary Coach Ron Cooper. Defensively, Jirgl saw five defensive players earn Conference USA – All -Conference recognition including linebacker Anthony Wint. Additionally, five senior players signed NFL free agent contracts. Jirgl helped fulfill a successful recruiting class before his departure which included the northern part of Florida and the state of Georgia.
Prior to arriving at FIU, Jirgl spent one season at The University of South Dakota where he coached the safeties. The University of South Dakota Coyote’s compete in arguably one of the most difficult FCS Division 1-AA conferences in the country in the Missouri Valley Conference. Coaching alongside Defensive Coordinator Jason Petrino and Defensive Line Coach Marquice Williams, the Coyotes played nine Top 25 teams throughout the season including the #3 nationally ranked Oregon Ducks, who were led by Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota. Jirgl tutored Tyson Graham the #3 ranked safety in the FCS 2017 draft class. Responsible for recruiting Nebraska, South Dakota and Minnesota, Jirgl was influential in the 2015 signing class.
Before joining the Coyote’s staff, Jirgl coached the linebackers and special teams for two seasons at Albright College, a Division III program in Pennsylvania. He helped Albright to back-to-back 8-3 seasons and two post season appearances. Each season Jirgl saw one of his linebackers earn All-Conference recognition. Jirgl successfully recruited in the states of Maryland, Virginia, New Jersey and Washington D.C. and put together recruiting classes that saw individual Malik Gilmore earn D3football.com First Team All-American.
Jirgl’s first taste of coaching came in 2011 when he coached linebackers and the secondary at The Academy of Holy Angels in Richfield, Minn. He helped turn a 4-7 team into a squad that finished 9-2 and allowed fewer than 12 points per game.
A 2010 graduate of Winona State University, Jirgl was a two year starter at strong safety for the Warriors. A Division II program in Minnesota, Jirgl was a part of Northern Sun Conference championship teams in 2007 and 2010, while making NCAA post season tournament appearances in 2006 and 2007.
Jirgl earned All-Conference honors after a senior season in which he led his team in tackles (75), interceptions (four), forced fumbles (two) and recovered fumbles (two). He eclipsed 150 tackles for his career.
Jirgl graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Winona State in 2010 and received his master’s degree in Education and Sport Management from The University of South Dakota in 2015.
