Walt Fletcher will begin his fourth season with the Whittier College football program and first season as the defensive line coach in 2009. For the last two years he has been the recruiting coordinator as he brings 10 years of coaching experience to the table.

Fletcher joined the Poet staff in 2006 after serving two years for Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival Occidental College in 2004 and 2005. While at Occidental he was the defensive line coach in '04 and moved to inside linebackers in '05. He helped the Tigers to back-to-back NCAA Division III Playoff appearances and mentored four different players to All-SCIAC honors.

In his first year with Whittier he coached inside linebackers and was the special teams coordinator but moved to the offensive line in 2007. The Poets showed improved in every major offensive statistical category with over a 106 yards per game and 8.2 points per game increase. The running game went from an 81-yard per game average to a 144.2-yard per game average in 2006 to 2007. The offensive line also surrendered 20 fewer sacks from '06 to '07 as WC led the SCIAC in sacks per pass attempts.

A graduate of Ithaca College in 1999, Fletcher started his coaching career as an intern for the Director of Football Operations at Cornell University where he watched the Big Red go 7-3 and finish third in the Ivy League.

In 2000 he moved to Division II Saint Anselm College (N.H.) where he was the defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator for three seasons. In his final campaign with Saint Anselm the Hawks' defense finished first in D-II in turnover margin. Fletcher had three players earn All-Northeast 10 honors with one student-athlete being recognized as a first-team All-New England selection.

In 2003 he was the defensive line coach, special teams coordinator and recruiting coordinator at Puget Sound.

Fletcher played on the defensive line at Nichols College (Mass.) before he transferred to Ithaca College.

He currently resides in Whittier.
