Men's Basketball Tramples the Stags, Saucedo '10 Two Rebounds Away from Triple-Double


Jonathan Saucedo '10 scored eleven points, handed out ten assists and grabbed eight rebounds as Whittier College won 75-65 over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action at Graham Athletics Center on January 24.

Vernon Covington '08 pitched in with a double-double of his own scoring 17 points and pulling down ten boards.  He also finished with four assists.  Jeff McLean '09 scored a team-high 18 points on 8-of-9 shooting off the bench.  Marcus Gibson '09 and Tim Fanning '07 added 12 and 10 points, respectively.

The Poets got off to a great start, shooting 48 percent in the first half while holding the Stags to just 35 percent shooting from the field.  The last time Claremont would lead in the game came at the 11:30 mark in the first half when they held a 13-12 lead.  Whittier was up 34-24 at the half.  In the second half, the Stags pulled within seven points with 17:04 left in the game, but once again the Poets pulled away, expanding their lead to as much as 20 points with 2:25 remaining.
