Poets Fall in Heartbreaker to Holy Names, Crow Scores Game-High 25 Points

Travis Crow '09 scored a game-high 25 points, but Whittier
College lost 81-80 to NAIA opponent, Holy Names University in the
Graham Athletics Center on November 20. The loss evens the
Poets record to 1-1 overall.
Crow made all seven shots he took from the field, including a pair
of three-pointers, and was 9-for-10 from the charity stripe.
Mike Archuletta '09 scored 15 points and grabbed a
team-high eight rebounds in just 17 minutes of action off the
bench. Marcus Gibson '09 scored 12 points on four
three-pointers and Jeff McLean '09 pitched in with ten points and
six rebounds. Vernon Covington '08 pulled down seven boards
and was credited with a game-high five assists.
Holy Names was led by Josh Dozier, who had game-highs with 25
points and twelve rebounds. Jonathan Kargas scored 17 for the
Hawks, including the game-winning three-pointer with nine seconds
remaining in the game. He was 4-for-4 from beyond the
arc. Nicholas Bailey and Troy Cotton scored 12 and 11 points,
respectively.
Both teams shot well from the field; the Poets shot 49%, while Holy
Names shot 46% and torched the nets at 57% in the second
half. The Hawks held a slight edge in turnovers, forcing 25
from the Poets while committing 21 themselves. Despite a
slight height disadvantage, the Poets won the battle on the glass,
out rebounding their opponents 40-30.
The Poets are in action again on November 26, when they travel to
Southern California rival La Sierra University. The game is
scheduled to begin at 7:30pm.
