Whittier Men Win Big in Purple & Gold Classic, Goucher and Keene St. Women Move On

The Purple and Gold Poets Classic kicked off in the Graham
Athletics Center with four games on January 4. On the men's
side of things, California Lutheran University defeated La Sierra
University by a score of 74-65 and Whittier College cruised past
the University of California, Santa Cruz, 84-54. In the
women's tournament, Goucher College snuck past Whittier 58-56 and
Keene State College beat Bethany Lutheran College 65-61.
In game one, six Cal Lutheran players scored in double figures on
their way to the win. Mychal Owens posted a double-double
with eleven points and twelve rebounds to lead the Kingsmen.
Chad Acerboni scored a team-high 14 points. Andy Meier
finished with twelve points and six rebounds. Deshion Inniss
and Kyle Knudsen each scored eleven points and Lucas Gums scored
ten points.
Roy Stubbs was the high scorer for La Sierra, putting up a
game-high 19 points and added ten boards. Cortez Ward
finished with 18 points and seven rebounds. Ryan White came
off the bench to score 13 points.
Goucher won the second game of the day by a narrow margin thanks to
a double-double by Taqwisha Richardson who scored 16 points and
grabbed 12 rebounds. Shadae Swan led all scorers in the game
with 19 points and added six rebounds.
Whittier was led by Kourtney Zilbert with 14 points and seven
boards. Essence Scott finished with nine points and seven
rebounds and Morgan Sabala and Erica Amico pitched in with eight
points apiece.
In the third game between Keene St. and Bethany Lutheran, Keene St.
was led by Nicole Simmler with 15 points. Emily Flewelling
and Danielle Graveley each scored 13 points and grabbed nine and
eight rebounds, respectively.
Eva Voss led Bethany Lutheran with a game-high 21 points and added
eight rebounds. Leslie Bremer finished with a game-high
eleven rebounds, six on the offensive end, to go with eight
points.
In the final game of the evening, Whittier College was led to a
convincing victory by Vernon Covington (pictured) with 14 points,
four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Travis Crow
finished with 12 points and a game-high three blocks. Mike
Archuletta scored 13 points and was credited with three
steals. David Hayashi finished with double figures in the
scoring column for the second straight game with ten points.
Jeff McLean came off the bench to score eight points, six rebounds
and three steals. Urriahn Barragan was credited with a
game-high five steals and three assists.
The Classic continues on January 5 with four more games in the
Graham Athletics Center. The women wrap up their tournament
play with the consolation game between Whittier and Bethany
Lutheran at 2pm. The final will be played between Goucher and
Keene St. at 4pm before the men end their Classic-style format with
games between Cal Lutheran and UC-Santa Cruz at 6pm and Whittier
taking on La Sierra in the finale at 8pm.
