Poets Defeat Caltech at Home, Rematch With Cal Lutheran on February 6

Whittier College made six first half three-pointers and nine in
the game on their way to a 65-52 victory over Caltech in SCIAC
action at the Graham Athletics Center on February 2. The
Poets are now 10-8 overall, already surpassing their 2006-07 win
total, and are just one game out of fourth place with a 3-4
conference record.
Jeff McLean '09 and Travis Crow '09 led the Poets with eleven
points each. McLean grabbed four rebounds and was credited
with his SCIAC-leading 36th steal of the season.
Crow hit three shots from beyond the arc and pulled down three
rebounds. Vernon Covington '08 finished with eight points and
nine rebounds, seven on the offensive end. He also had two
blocked shots and two assists. Bill Ritter '08 was perfect
from the field and finished with nine points and five rebounds.
Caltech (1-17, 0-7) was led by Bryan Hires with 14 points and a
game-high 12 rebounds. Matthew Dellatorre scored a game-high
17 points and Travis Haussler had eleven points and nine
rebounds.
The Poets took a 15-point halftime lead thanks to 45% shooting in
the first half. They went 6-for-12 from long range. In
the game, Whittier out rebounded Caltech 48-34 and forced 14 Beaver
turnovers. The Whittier bench played a major part in the win,
out scoring Caltech's reserves 35-3.
The Poets travel to California Lutheran University on February 6
for a rematch of the conference opener in which Whittier beat the
then nationally ranked #24 Kingsmen. Tip-off from Thousand
Oaks, Calif., is scheduled for 7:30pm.
