CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Whittier College Men's Basketball team suffered their fifth straight double digit loss Thursday as they fell 87-67 to Claremont-M-S.

The five Poet starters were held to just 25 points together, while Eric Davis (Ventura, Calif.) and Conner Longmire (Tarzana, Calif.) poured in 18 and 16 points, respectively.

CMS held a 12-6 lead in the first few minutes but the Purple & Gold would rally as they would pull within one with a Longmire triple and a breakaway dunk from Davis.  But the Stags would then put together an 8-2 run that gave them a cushion and then stretched their lead to 27-15 soon after following another seven straight.

A Davis jumper and a Chris Kapano (Los Alamitos, Calif.) layup would pull Whittier within single digits soon after.  Anthony Martinez (Cerritos, Calif.) would spark a run of three consecutive three-pointers being joined by Rion Black-Hogins (Cupertino, Calif.) and Longmire that cut the deficit to seven.

But over the final 2:40, Whittier would be held scoreless, while a layup and jumper from the Stags would push their lead back to double digits at the break.

Despite adding another 37 points in the second half the Poets were unable to crack down on the defensive end as CMS would add 46 en route to the 20 point victory.

Longmire was 6-for-9 from the floor with four boards.  Davis was 7-for-12 and Kapano, Martinez, and Louis Kurihara (Culver City, Calif.) each added eight points apiece.  Nick Potthoff (Phoenix, AZ) finished with a season low three points but registered a team high six rebounds.

Whittier shot 47% from the floor and forced 15 turnovers, adding 21 points off of them.  But where they struggled was in the paint where they were outscored 32-18 while being outrebounded 38-23.

Whittier remains on the road tomorrow, Saturday, February 11 as they take on Pomona-Pitzer with game time set for 7:00pm.
