Men’s Basketball Travels to Colorado

WHITTIER, Calif. – This weekend the Whittier College Men's Basketball team is traveling to Colorado for two non-conference games against Colorado College and Johnson & Wales.

Whittier is currently 1-3 and is coming off a 1-1 mark at the Holiday Inn La Mirada Purple & Gold Poet Classic.  The Poets open with Colorado College tonight, Friday, November 30 beginning at 5:00pm.  They then come back the very next day, Saturday, December 1 to take on Johnson & Wales beginning at 3:00pm.

The Purple & Gold are averaging 88.3 points per game, while shooting 49% from the field and 44% from three-point territory.  They total 38.8 rebounds per game and 15 assists.  Defensively they are giving up 85.8 points per game and allowing opponents to shoot 44.1% from the field and 39.2% from deep.

They are led by Ahmad Young (Sunnyvale, Calif.) who is averaging 15.8 points per game, while shooting 60% from the field.  He is joined by Kenyatta Louder (Compton, Calif.) who is putting up 14.3 points per game, shooting 43% from the field along with averaging 8.0 rebounds per game.  The deep threat is Conner Longmire (Tarzana, Calif.) who is putting up 14.0 points per game, while shooting 38.5% from three-point territory.  Another long shooter is Nick Potthoff (Phoenix, AZ) who is also in double digits at 12.5 points per game.  He too can connect from three-point territory with a 45.5% clip from behind the arc. Running the point is Journey Shank (Burbank, Calif.) who is averaging 10 points per game, shooting 50% from the field and dishing out 5.3 assists per game.         

Colorado College (Friday, November 30 @ 5:00pm)

The Tigers are currently 2-3 dropping their last two contests against UCCS (106-64) and George Fox (78-73).  They average 72.6 points per game but are giving up 85.2 PPG to opponents.  As a team they shoot 44% from the field and 36% from deep.  Where they struggle is turning the ball over averaging 21.8 turnovers per game with a -6.4 turnovers margin. 

They are led by CooXooEli Black who is one of two Tigers averaging double figures.  He is putting up 16.8 points per game, shooting 49% from the field, while totaling 42 rebounds (8.4 RPG).  He also has eight assists and seven blocks.  Joining him is Aaron Acosta who has a 14.2 PPG average.  He shoots 47% from the field with 18 boards (3.6 RPG).  Running the point is Edmund Pendleton who is averaging 5.2 points per game but has 20 assists on the season and 23 rebounds.

Johnson & Wales (Saturday, December 1 @ 4:00pm MT)

JWU is currently undefeated on the season at 4-0.  Their wins on the season have come against Wisconsin-River Falls (85-81), Iowa Wesleyan (95-73), George Fox (92-82), and Texas-Tyler (94-87).  They average 91.5 points per game, shoot 47% as a team from the field, 33% from three-point territory and 79% from the charity stripe.  Inside they bring down 37 rebounds a game and dish out 15.3 assists.

They are giving up 80.8 points per game and holding opponents to 47% shooting from the field and a mere 24.2% from deep.  Andrew Romero is the leading score with a 29.5 average, while shooting 51% from the field.  He also brings in 7.0 RPG, 4.8 assists and 3.8 steals.  Jontrell Herman pours in 27 points per game and adds 6.5 RPG and 5.3 assists.  The final JWU player in double figures is center Jordan Miles who is averaging 10.8 points per game and shoots 62% from the field.
