Poets finish 5th in first SCIAC matchup

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Whittier College golf team after a strong 3rd place finish in the Lampkin Invite on Saturday finished 5th in their first SCIAC tilt of 2012 with a score of 307.
Whittier who again was led senior Doug Kennedy who finished tied for 9th with a 76 shot +4 over and was four shots off the leader Chris Lungo (Chapman) who shot a 72.
The Purple & Gold had five players hit under 80 for their round including Kennedy (76), Greg Garcia (77), Mark Alvarez (79), Matt Liotta-Butterworth (79), and Andrew Moreno-Hunt (80), while Ryan Kitabayashi finished with an 84.
The event took place at Red Hill located in Redlands, Calif. and the Bulldogs of the University of Redlands took home 1st place with a 300, with Claremont-M-S (307), La Verne (308), Cal Lutheran (309) finishing 2nd, 3rd, and 4th.
Rounding out the rest of the field included Chapman (312), Occidental College (315), and Pomona-Pitzer (330) who finished 6th, 7th, and 8th.
On the day, Kennedy shot a +4 and collected four bogeys on the front nine before coming back on the back nine to hit one bogey and one birdie to shoot a 36.
Garcia who shot well on the day shooting +5 despite hitting a double bogey on hole 15 shot a 38 on the front nine to go with a birdie and shot a 39 on the back nine to go with a birdie and two bogeys.
Alvarez who shot a +7 collected a birdie on the front nine and then came back on the back nine to hit two more birdies to lead the Poets in birdie totals.
Whittier now travels to Thousand Oaks, Calif. to take part in SCIAC #2 located at Sterling Hills on Thursday, February 23 beginning at 12pm.
