VENTURA, Calif. – Despite posting a 10th place finish during the CA Intercollegiate, the Whittier College Men's Golf team posted one of the best two round totals in program history as they combined for a 586 (+10).
The Invitational took place Monday and Tuesday at Olivas Links Golf Course. The two day event featured 12 teams and 60 players.
Following the completion of action on day one, the Poets found themselves in 8th place (296) after all five players shot sub 80 rounds. On day two, the Poets improved six strokes posting a 290 but it still wasn't good enough to move them up as they dropped to 10th.
The Purple & Gold did beat out SCIAC rivals Occidental College and Pomona-Pitzer. Tyler Hoefferle (San Dimas, Calif.) put together his best tournament thus far here at Whittier finishing in a tie for 15th with a 76 followed by a career low 67, which put him -1 over the two days.
Nicholas Medeiros (Riverside, Calif.) was right behind him in 20th as he went 74-70 (E), Alex Valadez (Anaheim, Calif.) was 37th with a 73-75 (+4) and Tyler Bliss (Glendora, Calif.) rounded out the upper classmen posting scores of 73-78 (+7).
Newcomer Martin Bedino (Nequen, Neuquen, Argentina) was able to get in the 70's on day one with a 79 but fell back four strokes with an 83 to wrap up the invite placing him 58th.
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps' Jonathan Shaw took home the individual title as he finished at 11-under-par (67-66-133). Arizona Christian's Nick Norton was the runner-up at seven-under-par (70-67-137). Marymount's Michael Padilla finished the tournament in third at six-under-par (69-69-138). Chapman's Avery Keating (70-70-140) and Ottawa University's Quinn Edwards (68-72-140) tied for fourth at four-under par.
Ottawa University - Arizona took home the team title with a seven-under-par finish (290-279-569). Chapman was one stroke back and in second (285-285-570) and Cal Lutheran was third. Arizona Christian (290-284-574) was fourth, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (288-290-578) was fifth, Marymount (293-286-579) and The Master's University (296-283-579) tied for sixth, George Fox (291-290-581) was eighth, La Verne (297-286-583) was ninth, Whittier (296-290-586) was 10th and Pomona-Pitzer (303-284-587) and Occidental (299-288-587) tied for 11th.
Whittier returns to the links next Wednesday, September 27 as they take on Chapman University in a dual match taking place at Candlewood Country Club.
