Men's Lacrosse Buries the Gophers, Lackey '09 Leads Division III in Points


Anthony Lackey '09 scored four goals and assisted on four others to lead Whittier College to a 12-4 victory over Goucher College on Senior Night at Graham Lacrosse Field on March 21.  The Poets are now 4-5 overall and 4-3 against Division III opponents.

Lackey currently leads the nation in points with 45 (26 goals, 19 assists).  Dave Gerbarg '07 scored two goals and had an assist in his final home game for the Poets.  He stands at fourth place in the country with 40 points (20 goals, 20 assists).  His 20 assists lead the nation in that category.  Kevin McCarroll '08 also scored twice.  Matt Mulry '09, Michael Prickett '07 and Ben Barchey '09 each added a goal.  Prickett also had an assist.  Ben Brown '09 made nine saves in goal.

The Poets jumped out to a 2-1 lead after the first quarter.  Lackey's goal and two assists in the second gave the Poets a 5-2 lead at halftime.  Four different Poets scored in the third quarter as the Poets extended their lead to five.  Lackey scored two more goals and added an assist in the final stanza to give the Poets the 12-4 win.  Brown and the Poets' defense held the Gophers to just one goal each quarter.  Whittier won the groundball battle 32-21 and out shot Goucher 30-20.  The Poets converted on three of their five man-up opportunities and stopped Goucher on all three of their man-up attempts.
