Whittier College men's lacrosse picked up a 7-4 win over Drew
University in San Diego, Calif., on March 15 and then lost a tough
battle at home to #20 Keene State College 9-8 in overtime on March
19. The Poets, now 3-2 in NCAA play, will be heading east on
March 27 for a four-game road trip that includes games with Roanoke
and Lynchburg, the respective #12 and #13 teams in the country.
Against Drew, Kevin McCarroll '08 and Ben Barchey '09 scored two
goals apiece. Anthony Lackey '09 scored one goal and assisted
on another. Chuck Wagner '08 and Sean McCarroll '11 rounded
out the Poet scoring with one goal each.
Ben Brown '09 continued to be strong in goal, making 13 saves and
conceding just four goals. The groundball battle was even, as
both teams picked up 28 groundballs. Lackey led Whittier with
seven groundballs, while Kevin McCarroll and Todd Drotleff '08
finished with four apiece.
Against Keene St., Lackey led the Poets with four goals and two
assists. Matt Mulry '09 scored two goals. Christian
Wright '10 finished with a goal and an assist. Kevin
McCarroll rounded out the scoring with a goal of his own.
David Denniston '08 led Whittier with five groundballs. The
Poets picked up 27 groundballs as a team, while Keene St. finished
with 13. Brown was credited with eleven saves in goal.
The Poets trailed for the entire game. They were down 4-2 at
halftime and 8-3 through three quarters. Lackey scored three
of the Poets' five goals in the fourth quarter, while Brown and the
Whittier defense blanked Keene St. to force overtime.
Unfortunately for Whittier, Keene St. scored the game-winning goal
just 50 seconds into the overtime period to take the 9-8
victory.
The Poets begin their four-game east coast trip on March 28, when
they take on Goucher College. The game is scheduled to begin
at 4:00pm EST.
