Poets score six goals in second quarter, beat Goucher 10-9


TOWSON, Md. - The Whittier College men's lacrosse team began its four-game road trip on the East Coast on Saturday afternoon with a 10-9 win over Goucher College. The Poets scored six goals in the second quarter to take a two-goal cushion at the intermission en route to the win.

WC (5-5) was led by the duo of Mike Neumyer and Ben Brown. Neumyer (2g, 2a) tallied a game-high four points while Brown made 18 saves.

The Poets had four players score two goals as Anthony Lackey, Sam Russell and Daniel McQuade joined Neumyer with a pair of goals.

Christian Wright added two assists in the win.

Whittier's second quarter rally started with Neumyer's first goal of the game at the 12:46 mark. Goucher (6-3) scored its third man-up goal of the game just over a minute later to take a 3-2 lead but the purple and gold scored five of the next seven goals.

Lackey and Neumyer went back-to-back at the 8:47 and 7:21 mark. respectively, to give WC its first lead of the game, 4-3, since Russell opened the contest with a goal at 12:34 of the first quarter.

McQuade added his first goal at 6:20 of the second quarter and Matt Mulry and Lackey closed out the half with goals at 2:52 and 20 seconds remaining.

The Poets never trailed again as they held on for the one-goal win.

WC was 16-of-17 on clears and corralled 33 ground balls to Goucher's 24. The Poets also won 12-of-21 face-offs.

The purple and gold returns to action at they travel to Dover, Del., to face Wesley College at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, March 31.
