AURORA, Ill. – The Whittier College men's lacrosse team opened up their trip to Illinois Friday but couldn't bounce back after being held scoreless in the second and third quarters as they fell 9-4 to Aurora University.
On a chilly afternoon at Vago Field the Purple & Gold jumped out to a 2-0 lead within the first few minutes following an unassisted goal from Foster Cunningham (San Anselmo, Calif.) and a score from Eric Omri (Bellevue, WA) being fed by Kevin Ewing (Annapolis, MD).
Jack Barry for the Spartans would cut the deficit to one on the ensuing faceoff but WC would answer with their third goal at the 3:29 mark from Matt Symes (Coquitlam, BC, Canada). Aurora managed to add a last second goal to end the first to cut the deficit to one 3-2 and that would carry over into the second as the Spartans would tally five unanswered to take a 7-3 lead into the break.
Out of the half the Poets again were blanked as they trailed 8-3 heading into the final quarter. Aurora would add the first in the final period and despite an unassisted goal from Aaron Self (San Clemente, Calif.) that cut the deficit to five the Poets were held scoreless over the final 10:35 that allowed the Spartans to come away with the 9-4 victory.
Nathan Kleponis (Tustin, Calif.) between the posts finished with 10 saves against 19 shots along with picking up three groundballs.
Whittier returns to action, tomorrow, Saturday, April 5 as they take on Illinois Wesleyan beginning at 5:00pm.
