Three Second Half Goals Propel Redlands Past Poets

Whittier College men's soccer faced off against the conference-leading University of Redlands on October 13, and continued to play the Bulldogs as tough as any team in the conference, despite the 4-1 score line.  The Poets lost 1-0 in their first meeting this season and at halftime of game two, the teams were tied at one.

The Bulldogs took the lead in the 26th minute thanks to a goal from Ross Schunk on an assist from Kody Andrew.  The Poets answered back before the halftime break.  Nnadozie Nwokeabia '09 scored in the 33rd minute from a sharp angle that caught a deflection from a Redlands' defender.  Whittier goalkeeper, Paul Stepler-Camp '10, made three of his six saves in the first half to keep the score knotted at one.

In a ten minute span of the second half, the Poets' hopes for an upset were over.  Andrew put a rebound in the back of the net in the 56th minute for what would prove to be the game-winner.  Less than a minute later, Schunk scored for the second time to give the Bulldogs a 3-1 lead.  They added another goal in the 63rd minute to make the final score 4-1.

The lone goal for the Poets marked the first time since 2000 that a Poets squad scored a goal against Redlands.  Last season, Whittier was out scored 11-0 in two games against the Bulldogs.

The Poets travel to Pomon-Pitzer Colleges on October 17 for a 4pm game.  The two teams played to a 2-2 tie in their last meeting.  The Poets then host their final three games of the season against SCIAC opponents Caltech, La Verne and Occidental.
