Men's Soccer Earns Second SCIAC Win at Pomona

Despite being out shot 15-2 in the contest, Whittier College men's soccer picked up its second conference win on October 17, a 1-0 victory over Pomona-Pitzer Colleges in Claremont, Calif.  The win improves the Poets' record to 2-11-1 overall and 2-7-1 in SCIAC play.

The lone goal of the game came from DJ Covarrubias '11 in the 24th minute, when his shot from the edge of the penalty area beat the Sagehens' goalkeeper.  The Poets defense then did its part to keep Pomona (4-10-1, 3-7-1) off the scoreboard.  Nine of the Sagehen's shots came in the second half.  Paul Stepler-Camp '10 earned his first clean sheet in a Poets uniform by making seven saves in goal.

The win marks the first time since 1995 that Whittier has beaten Pomona.  In their first meeting this season, the two teams played to a 2-2 tie.  The Poets look to make it two in a row on October 20, when they take on the California Institute of Technology.  The game begins at 11am on the Donald E. Graham Soccer Field.
