Patricio Carregha '12 took three shots for the Poets against
Caltech on October 4: two resulted in goals. Whittier College
Men's Soccer eventually won 3-1 over the Beavers to pick up their
first SCIAC win and improved their record to 2-8 overall and 1-5 in
conference play this season.
The Poets saw themselves fall behind in the first ten minutes of
play. Caltech's Tyler Volkoff scored in the 8th
minute to give the Beavers an early 1-0 lead. Carregha gave
the Poets their equalizer in the 27th minute on an
unassisted goal. The teams went into the locker room tied 1-1
at the halftime break.
Despite getting out shot 10-4 in the second half, the Poets
continued to pressure and got the go ahead goal in the
75th minute. Joseph Gelaro '10 found Eddie Baker
'09, and Baker found the back of the net to put the Poets up for
good. Carregha added an insurance goal in the 79th
minute to complete the 3-1 victory.
Whittier goalkeeper Michael Read '10 rebounded from the early goal
to make three saves and ensure the win.
The Poets play the second game of their three-game SCIAC road trip
on October 8 at the University of La Verne. The game is
scheduled to begin at 4:00pm.
