Men's Soccer Loses Two More in SCIAC Action

Whittier College Men's Soccer is in the midst of a three-game
skid after SCIAC losses to Occidental College on October 11 and
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on October 15. The Poets have scored
just one goal during the losing streak as their record falls to
2-11 overall and 1-8 in conference play this season.
The Poets lost 3-1 at Occidental. The Tigers got off to a
quick start with a goal in the 6th minute from Fran
Taylor. He would score his second goal in the 23rd
minute to give Occidental all the offense they would need.
The Poets cut the deficit in half late in the first half when Joey
Gelaro '10 netted an unassisted goal in the 40th
minute.
The Tigers stymied any chance Whittier would have at a comeback
with an insurance goal in the 61st minute to finish off
the 3-1 win. Whittier goalkeepers Mike Read '10 and Paul
Stepler-Camp '10 combined for 12 saves in the game.
In their next game against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, the Poets had a
number of chances to come away with a tie or win despite being a
man down for the majority of the game. The Stags took the
lead in the 31st minute with a goal off a free
kick. Eight minutes later, the Poets' Brendan McWalters '11
was sent off with a red card for a hard foul. Neither team
would find the back of the net for the rest of the game, despite
having a number of scoring opportunities. The Stags took 13
shots in the game while the Poets attempted nine.
The Poets continue SCIAC play on October 18 when they play host to
California Lutheran University for Homecoming weekend. Play
starts on Graham Soccer Field at 11:00am.
