Poets run by Claremont-M-S in conference clash, 3-1

WHITTIER, Calif. - Adolfo Santos scored one goal and added one assists as the Whittier College men's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to eight-consecutive games on Saturday afternoon with a 3-1 win over Claremont-M-S at the Graham Soccer Field.
Santos scored the game's first goal in the sixth minute on an assist from Thomas Barber and later had his foot in Whittier's final goal as he found Sam Russell at the 77:47 mark.
Whittier (8-4-2, 7-2-2 SCIAC) held a 1-0 lead at halftime but needed only 1:48 into the second half to extend its lead to 2-0. Patricio Carregha picked up his first assist of the season as Jonathan Palomino scored his fourth goal of the year.
Michael Read started in goal for Whittier and played over 85 minutes. He made seven saves in earning the win. He was relieved by Paul Stepler-Camp who recorded one save.
Read had six saves in the first half.
Claremont-M-S (7-7-2, 6-5-1 SCIAC) outshot Whittier for the game (22-15) and had one more shot on goal than the Poets (9-8) but the Stags were held scoreless for the first 88:29 of the game. CMS finally broke free at 88:30 on a rebound off a penalty kick.
The PK attempt bounced off the post and found Walker Adams who put the ball into the open net.
Whittier defended all five of Claremont's corner kicks.
The Poets are now in second place in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with games against first-place Pomona-Pitzer, Occidental and Caltech remaining on the schedule.
WC will face Pomona on Monday, October 26, at 4 pm.
