THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Whittier College Men's Soccer team opened up Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play Wednesday night but were shutout 3-0 by the Kingsmen of Cal Lutheran University.

The game proved very physical at Rolland Stadium as both teams combined for 33 fouls.  CLU got on the scoreboard early following the first touch from Brandon Kearney who was sent through on goal firing off a left-footed shot that connected off the inside of the right post.

This proved to be the eventual game-winner as the Purple & Gold managed a mere eight shots all night.  The Kingsmen added to their lead in the 25th minute when Diego Ortega connected from the right side of the box and then later tacked on another in the 37th tapping in a cross-fed in by Kearney.

Sam Johnson (Issaquah, WA) and Alejandro Trujillo (Buena Park, Calif.) each finished with two shots for the Poets while Connor Tait-Mole (Livermore, Calif.), Ethan Fletcher (Fort Collins, CO), Matteo Loi (Kirkland, WA) and Parker McDonald (Corona, Calif.) each recorded a shot.

Nathan Armas (Montclair, Calif.) was tagged with the loss as he collected four saves against seven shots.

The Poets remain on the road this Saturday, September 9 as they travel to take on the University of La Verne with gametime set for 7:30pm.
