LA VERNE, Calif. – The Whittier College Men's Soccer team remained on the road Saturday and took on their second Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) team in the Uni. of La Verne but couldn't hold an early lead as they fell 3-2.
The Poets are still seeking their first win of 2017 as they drop to 0-3, 0-2 SCIAC.
Freshman Luis Espitia (Paramount, Calif.) got the scoring started for the Purple & Gold as he finished a touch from Connor Tait-Mole (Livermore, Calif.) in the first two minutes of the game. La Verne though came back ten minutes later to tie things up as Johnny DeRueda would find the equalizer from Tyler Avila.
But the Poets would bounce back this time from Tait-Mole who would find the back of the goal himself in the 16th minute, which gave Whittier a 2-1 lead at the break.
But in the second half, the offense stalled as the Poets would be held to a mere eight shots, while DeRueda would complete the hat trick for the Leos. He scored the game-tying goal in the 50th minute and then the go-ahead strike with eight minutes left as he capitalized on the Poets being a man-down due to two yellow cards being issued to Sam Johnson (Issaquah, WA).
Whittier outshot La Verne 22-10 but was edged on corner kicks 4-3.
Nathan Armas (Montclair, Calif.) picked up his third loss on the season as he played all 90:00, while recording one save. Tait-Mole led the offense with a goal and an assist on two shots, while Alejandro Trujillo (Buena Park, Calif.) would pick up nine shots with three being on goal.
Whittier returns to Memorial Stadium for their home opener on Wednesday, September 13 as they take on Claremont-M-S with game time set for 7:00pm.
