In just three seasons as the head coach of the men's soccer team Paul Walmsley has turned the program into one of the top contenders in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. In 2009 the Poets had one of their best seasons in recent memory with a 9-5-4 record (8-2-4 SCIAC) and were the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament.
Walmsley placed five players on the all-conference team led by Adolfo Santos and DJ Covarrubias who earned first-team honors. Srdan Jovanovic, Brendan McWalters and Michael Read all earned second-team recognition.
The 2009 Poets broke down walls as they build an 11-game unbeaten streak and snapped long losing streaks to Redlands, Cal Lutheran and Claremont-M-S.
In all Walmsley has placed seven players on one of the two all-conference teams and has an overall record of 14-35-5, 12-25-5 in conference.
Walmsley has been involved in soccer for over 30 years as a player, player-coach, head coach and referee. He obtained the USSF A License in 2000, the English FA Coaching Certificate in 1994 and the Scottish Team Managers Certificate in 1990.
He played college soccer at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland and won the National Collegiate Club Championship with the University of Illinois in 1988. Prior to his collegiate playing days he signed on for semi professional forms at the age of 16 and had trials with Liverpool, Blackburn Rovers, Preston North End, Oldham Athletic and Blackpool FC.
Walmsley was originally hired just a few short weeks before the start of the 2007 season. His team scored goals in 11-of-18 games which includes a 1-0 shutout of SCIAC foe Pomona-Pitzer. Five times in his first season the Poets fell by a mere goal.
Eight times in 2008 the Poets were within two goals which includes four losses by just one goal. The '08 squad earned a season sweep of Caltech and a 2-1 win over SOKA University.
Walmsley has worked alongside coaches from Blackburn Rovers and Preston North End and has attended clinics with coaches from Inter Milan, Ajax, Barcelona, Liverpool, Everton and Newcastle United.
In 1997 he formed his own soccer business, the Soccer Center of Excellence, and trained thousands of youth and adults over the years. He ran his own indoor and outdoor soccer leagues with up to 140 teams playing each week. He also owned a retail soccer store and two fitness facilities and has refereed well over 1000 indoor and outdoor soccer games.
Walmsley has coached at the Preston North End (English Championship team) Soccer School, the Lancashire FA Center of Excellence, the Squaw Valley Soccer Camp, UK International Soccer Camps and Challenger British Soccer Camps.
He and his wife, Jennifer, have two children, Heather and Gunnar Pedersen Walmsley.
