Men’s Tennis Makes Big Impression at ITA Fall Championships

The Whittier College men's tennis team had a very strong outing at the ITA Division III Western Regional Fall Championships in Claremont, Calif., on September 29.  The tournament consisted of the top players of each team in the SCIAC and other western independent DIII schools including UC Santa Cruz, Chapman and Colorado College.

Junior transfer Lance Franey got his Whittier tennis career off to a great start with a routine 6-4, 6-4 win versus Pomona-Pitzer's slated #1 player John Williford before losing in the next round to the 10th seed, UC Santa Cruz's Max Liberty-Point.

Sophomore Sean Robertson also won his first round match against Cal Lutheran's number four Mike Schijf, 7-6, 6-4, but ran into a buzz saw in the 6th seed and Redland's number one, Eric Wagar.

Sophomore Justin DeLong and freshman Ted Wyatt had a good run in doubles consolation draw, winning comprehensive 8-1 and 8-4 victories against Pomona-Pitzer and Chapman, respectively. They were forced to default in the semifinals against Redlands on October 1 due to class conflicts.

Freshman Denis Minaev played competitive matches in defeat against CMS and P-P and represented himself well in his first college matches.

Men's tennis has two more weeks of fall practice before resume their regular season in January.
