Whittier Men’s Tennis Drops Exhibition to Cerritos College 6-3
The highly anticipated 2008 Poets tennis season got underway in
an exhibition match vs. Cerritos College on January 17. The Poets
lost to a fairly strong Cerritos club that just came off a 5-4
victory against nationally ranked #29 Chapman University.
"I am happy with the way we competed," says coach Bojalad. "We have
a lot to prove this season. We are a young and hungry team."
Justin DeLong ‘10 picked up where he left off last year. The
Whittier College Male Freshman Athlete of the Year award winner put
in a gutsy performance at #3 singles winning 6-1, 7-5 after
trailing 5-2 in the second set.
Freshmen Denis Minaev and Ryan Johnson put forth dominant
performances with steady baseline play winning 6-3, 6-2 and 6-1,
6-3 at #5 and #6 singles, respectively.
The Poets' first regular season competition kicks off at Biola,
February 1st at 2:00pm.
