Poets Win Season Opener

The Whittier College men's tennis team opened their '08 campaign
with a tough 6-3 win against NAIA opponent Biola University on
their own turf February 1. The victory is the second in as many
years against the Eagles.
The men's team, who are considerably better than a year ago, faced
a Biola squad that was equally as improved. The win required some
gutsy performances from several key players.
Number two and three players, Sean Robertson ‘10 and Justin
DeLong ‘10, improved their career records against Biola with
a singles and doubles combined record of 6-0. The two won at #1
doubles 8-6 and each won their singles matches in straight
sets.
The Poets also had key contributions from their freshman. Ted Wyatt
and Denis Minaev, despite not bringing their best tennis, toughed
out an 8-6 win at #3 doubles. Wyatt also won at number five singles
using a big first serve and forehand for a relatively routine 6-3,
6-4 victory. Ryan Johnson ‘10 played consistent tennis
from the back of the court to win at six singles 7-5, 6-2.
The Poets next play Sat. Feb. 9th in their home opener
against nationally ranked #17 Redlands. The match starts at 9:30
am.
