Men's Tennis: Tiebreakers a Deciding Factor Against Skidmore

Denis Minaev '11 has won his last seven matches.

It was a match full of tiebreakers, but it was the two at number one and two doubles that proved to be most crucial as Whittier College lost 7-2 to visiting Skidmore College on March 10.

Skidmore won at #1 doubles against Sean Robertson ‘10 and Justin DeLong ‘10 9-8 (3), then again at #2 doubles against Lance Franey '09 and Ted Wyatt ‘11 9-8(4). They also won at number three to sweep the doubles.

Whittier fought hard to climb out of the love-3 whole. Franey at #4 singles, came back from a set down to win 6-7, 6-4, (10-8). Denis Minaev ‘11, who has been on a tear as of late, won at #5 singles, also coming from behind 0-6, 6-2, (10-2). The win improves his record to 8-2 on the year. DeLong also fought courageously from a set down, but came up just short in the end losing 6-3, 6-7, (10-5).

"Obviously if we win one or two of those doubles points, it changes the complexion of the match," said coach Bojalad.  "Doubles is certainly an area of our game that needs improvement and will be addressed this week in practice."

The Poets next play Colorado College March 13 at home.  The match begins at 3:00pm.
