Men's Tennis Edged by Whitworth 6-3

In a match-up of two programs on the rise, the Whitworth Pirates
were able to deny a late- match run from the Poets in both doubles
and singles to secure a 6-3 win on March 26.
In doubles, Ted Wyatt ‘11 and Lance Franey ‘09, who
have won five of their last six doubles matches, scored a much
needed win at #2 doubles, prevailing 8-6.
After trailing 4-0 in doubles #3, Denis Minaev ‘11 and Ryan
Johnson '11 made a spirited run to tie things at 6-6, but came up
just short, losing the next two games and falling 8-6.
In singles, Sean Robertson ‘10 clearly played his best tennis
of the year, using pinpoint, aggressive forehands and an efficient
serve to win a routine 6-2, 6-3 match at #2 singles.
"This is the tennis we have been waiting to see in Sean all year,"
says Coach Bojalad, "It has not been a case of him underachieving,
but rather the confidence has not quite been there yet. I think
this will propel him to great things for our upcoming five-match
road trip."
Justin DeLong ‘10, who has been a rock this year at number
three singles, continued to be just that.. A big serve and
forehand one-two punch continues to be a winning formula for
him.
"It would have been nice to win against a team 13th in
the western region. Not until we pull off matches like this will we
be considered a legitimate force," added Bojalad.
The Poets begin a five-match, six-day road trip that starts Monday,
March 31 in Portland, Oregon vs. Pacific University.
