Poets go 1-1 in SCIAC play this weekend

WHITTIER, Calif. - The Whittier College men's tennis team returned home from its spring break trip this weekend and went 1-1 in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play. The Poets won its Friday match against Caltech, 8-1, but lost to No. 27 Cal Lutheran, 8-1, on Saturday morning.
The Poets (13-5, 3-3 SCIAC) swept singles play against the Beavers as the only loss was suffered at No. 1 doubles.
Patricio Carregha and Taylor Dimler, who filled in for an injured Frank Sun, led WC with a pair of 6-0, 6-0 wins at No. 3 and No. 6 singles each, respectively.
The Poets had an opportunity to take a 2-1 lead through doubles play against the Kingsmen but the No. 3 team of Gavin Smith and Sun dropped an 8-6 decision. Carregha and Lance Franey notched the only win for WC with an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles.
Franey battled hard at No. 4 singles but ultimately fell, 5-7, 6-4, (10-8). Smith also went the distance but lost 6-7(6), 6-1, (11-9).
The Poets return to action for their regular-season finale against Redlands at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 11.
