Poets tame Tigers in tune-up for No. 6 Amherst
WHITTIER, Calif. - The Whittier College men's tennis team tuned up for its showdown with No. 6 Amherst College on Thursday afternoon with an 8-1 win over Colorado College at the Richard Ettinger Tennis Courts.
For the third time this season the Poets (7-2) swept the doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead into singles play.
WC carried over its momentum by winning five of the singles singles matches en route to the win.
Frank Sun remained undefeated on the year as he won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles. Patricio Carregha matched Sun's effort with a 6-0, 6-0 win of his on at No. 3 singles.
Justin DeLong rolled to a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles while Lance Franey and Gavin Smith won 6-2, 6-3 and 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4 and No. 5 singles each, respectively.
The Poets' only loss came at No. 1 singles where Sean Robertson lost to Dan Solomon (ranked No. 15 in the West Region), 3-6, 6-1, 6-1.
The purple and gold's match with Amherst is set to start at 3:30 p.m. tomorrow, March 20.
