Carregha rallies to give Poets 5-4 win over Erskine
HILTON HEAD, S.C. - The Whittier College men's tennis team opened its spring break trip up with a 5-4 win over Division II Erskine on Saturday afternoon. The Poets held a 2-1 advantage through doubles play and held on to secure the team's 10th win of the year.
Whittier (10-3) held a 7-6 lead at No. 1 doubles and was serving for the win but the team of Justin DeLong and Sean Robertson failed to but away its opponents as they lost 9-7 to keep the door open for Erskine.
WC's No. 2 and No. 3 doubles each rolled to 8-3 wins respectively.
The purple and gold got singles wins at No. 4 and No. 6 from Lance Franey and Frank Sun to make the match 4-4 with the No. 3 match still going on.
Patricio Carregha was a set and break down but rallied for the 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 win to give WC its first win of the spring break trip.
The Poets return to action tomorrow, March 29, to face Lakeland (Ind.) College at 9 a.m. on the clay courts of Port Royal Racquet Club.
