Poets will start season at No. 13 in West Region


SKILLMAN, N.J. - The Intercollegiate Tennis Association released its preseason polls for the 2010 season and the Whittier College men's tennis team found itself in unfamiliar territory. One season after it completed its best season in school history the purple and gold earned a No. 13 ranking in the West Region.

Whittier finished the 2009 season 15-7 and placed fifth in the highly competitive Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

The SCIAC placed five teams in the top 15 of the West Region which includes Claremont-M-S and Redlands who came in at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. Cal Lutheran was ranked No. 7 and Pomona-Pitzer No. 8 in the preseason poll.

In the national rankings Claremont-M-S, Redlands, Cal Lutheran and Pomona-Pitzer all cracked the top 30. CMS held the highest ranking among SCIAC schools at No. 5, followed by Redlands (No. 11), Cal Lutheran (No. 28) and Pomona-Pitzer (No. 30).

In addition to the SCIAC portion of Whittier's schedule, the Poets will face No. 22 Texas-Tyler, No. 23 Skidmore, No. 17 Trinity (Conn.) and No. 29 Salisbury.

Last season the Poets reached as high as a No. 12 ranking in the West Region.

Whittier opens its season on February 2 against La Sierra at 3 pm.
