RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The Whittier College men's tennis team battled La Sierra and the elements in its season opener on Wednesday afternoon and still managed the impressive 9-0 sweep to jump start their 2010 season.
The Poets (1-0) rolled in the three doubles matches led the No. 2 team of Frank Sun and Gavin Smith who earned an 8-0 shutout victory.
The match of the day happened at No. 1 singles where Patricio Carregha came from behind to pick up the 6-7 (5), 6-1, (10-5) win. The sophomore, who played the majority of last year at No. 3 singles, got down 3-0 in the first set but rallied to take a 5-3 lead in the set.
Carregha squandered two set points and eventually fell in the first set in a tiebreaker. He responded with a 6-1 win in the second set and won by five in the super tiebreaker.
Freshman Julian Seneviratne made his debut with the purple and gold at No. 2 singles and won his first collegiate match, 6-1, 6-3.
Ted Wyatt was the first Poet finished at singles with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep at the No. 6 spot and it was Sun who officially clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles.
The Poets have a short turnaround as they hit the road to face Biola on Friday and host Division II Grand Canyon on Saturday at the Richard Ettinger Tennis Courts. The home match is scheduled for a 3 pm start.
