Seneviratne wins again but Poets drop fourth straight
WHITTIER, Calif. – Julian Seneviratne continued his winnings ways on Saturday morning with his fifth straight win in singles but the team struggles didn’t go away as No. 15 Trinity (Conn.) dealt Whittier a 7-2 loss at the Richard Ettinger Tennis Courts.
The Poets played strong in doubles earning a win at the second spot. Seneviratne and Patricio Carregha won the first five games and eventually took the match 8-2.
The No. 1 team of Sean Robertson and Justin DeLong battled hard but ultimately fell 8-5.
In singles the purple and gold took Trinity to three sets, three times. DeLong lost the first set 6-2 at No. 4 singles before evening the score with 6-2 second set win. In the tiebreaker he lost 10-3.
At No. 6 singles, Frank Sun lost the final two sets after taking the first 6-3. He dropped the second set 6-0 and the third 6-2.
The lone win at singles came from Seneviratne who improved his individual record to 9-4. He lost the first set 6-2 but gutted out back-to-back 6-4 wins to take the match.
The Poets will have three days rest before they host Whitworth at 4:30 pm on Wednesday, March 24.
