Whittier’s avenges 2011 loss to Vassar by winning 7-2 in 2012

WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College men's tennis team avenged their 2011 loss to Vassar as they cruised to the 7-2 victory over the Brewers in 2012 in the friendly confines of the Richard Ettinger Tennis Courts.
Whittier now improves to 4-1 on the season with six matches left on their home stand.
In 2011 the Poets were dealt a 6-3 loss to the Brewers in a fiery match that came down to the wire, but this time around in 2012 the Poets stepped up to the occasion cruised to the easy victory.
Junior Julian Seneviratne who was coming into the contest 6-0 in singles received his first loss of the season at No. 1 losing in a first set tiebreaker 7-6 (5) and then falling 6-4 in the second.
Again the Poets for the third straight match have gone into singles competition leading 2-1 after doubles relieving tension getting help from the No. 3 team of freshmen Shogo Shimizu and Matthew Herron who continue to pound their opponents at No. 3 winning impressively 8-4.
Sophomore Andrew Hansen continues his tear both in singles and doubles winning at No. 2 doubles with partner Chris Schommer 8-4 and then following that up with a straight sets victory 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5 singles.
Shimizu and Schommer won their respective matches within seconds of each other to give Whittier their 4th and 5th points with Schommer's clinching the 7-2 victory at No. 3 singles.
Herron came roaring back at No. 4 singles after suffering a loss in the first set tiebreak 7-6(4) to dominate the second set 6-1, and then taking the super tiebreaker 10-7.
Patricio Carregha found himself in a battle at No. 2 singles but found a way to clinch his sixth victory of the season despite being a set down. He came back to dominate the second set 6-2 and then held on for the 10-8 victory in the third set super tiebreaker.
Up next for the Poets comes University of Rochester (N.Y.) taking place on Thursday, March 15 beginning at 4pm where they will play simultaneously with the girls' team as they take on University of Rochester (N.Y.) as well.
