Water Polo Wins Two at Inland Empire Classic, Canner Scores 9 Goals in Tourney
Whittier College men's water polo went 2-2 at the Inland Empire Classic hosted by the University of Redlands on September 9 and 10. The Poets lost 17-4 to the University of California-Santa Barbara in the first match of the tournament, but bounced back against SCIAC foe Occidental College with a 10-9 win. On day two, the Poets lost to Division I University of California-San DIego 18-5, but once again picked up a SCIAC win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
Mark Canner '07 scored nine goals on the weekend, six on penalty throw opportunities. He also had five assists. He finished with two goals in each of the first three games of the weekend, and scored three in the win over CMS. Canner leads the team in goals this season with 12. Manny Sanchez '08 finished with five goals in the tournament, two in the CMS victory. He also did his part defensively with six steals. Jake Zerbe '07 scored four times in the tournament, tying him with Sanchez for second on the team with eight goals this season. Cody Pletcher '07 led the team defensively in the tournament with eight steals, five against Occidental. He also handed out five assists. John Jacobson '08 made 34 saves in goal.
