Water Polo Goes 1-2 in SCIAC Tourney, Poets Qualify for WWPA Championships

Whittier College finished in sixth place at the Southern
California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Water Polo
Championships hosted by the University of La Verne on November
10-12. The Poets lost 11-10 in overtime to California
Lutheran University on day one of the tournament, beat the
California Institute of Technology 18-3 on day two, and lost 7-6 to
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in their final contest.
Against Cal Lutheran, Cody Pletcher '07 led the Poets with four
goals. He had a team-high six goals in the tournament. Mark Canner
'07 added two goals. Matt Brammer '09 made 18 saves in goal.
In the victory over Caltech, Chris Kirby '09
scored a game-high five goals. Jake Zerbe
'07 scored four times and was credited with 2.5
steals. Matt Rogers '08 added three goals
and Mark Canner '07 scored twice. Brammer
and John Jacobson '08 combined to make twelve
saves.
In the final game of the weekend, Lance Haver '10
was the only multiple goal scorer for the Poets with two.
Zerbe was credited with four drawn penalties and three
steals. Brammer finished with ten saves.
The Poets qualified for the Western Water Polo Association
Championships as the ninth seed. They take on UC-Santa Cruz
in the first round on November 17.
