Men's Water Polo Continues Tough Non-Conference Schedule at Slugfest Tourney

Whittier College played four games in the two-day University of
California-Santa Cruz Slugfest Tournament on September 22 and
23. The Poets lost 10-6 to Fordham University in their first
game of the weekend. They faced the tournament hosts in game
two, losing that one 14-6. On day two, the Poets lost 13-3 to
the University of California-Davis and 12-5 to Santa Clara
University.
In the tournament opener, Matt Rogers '08, Chris Villanueva
'09 and Dante Morely-Montes '10 each
scored two goals and had an assist. Tim Beck
'10 had a pair of assists. Will Jackson
'11 got the start in goal and made eight saves for the
Poets.
Against Santa Cruz, Villanueva finished with two goals and an
assist. Rogers pitched in with a goal and two assists.
Beck, Jackson and Manny Sanchez '08 each tallied a
goal and an assist. Matt Brammer '09
returned to the goal to make 10 saves and two steals.
Division I nationally ranked #9, UC-Davis held the Poets to just
three goals. Two were scored by Villanueva, and Rogers had
the other. Brammer was credited with 11 saves and three
steals.
In the weekend finale, Villanueva led the way again with a pair of
goals. Jackson tallied a goal and an assist and Morely-Montes
had three assists. Brammer made seven saves and helped out
the offense with one assist.
The Poets are off until the Claremont Convergence Tournament on
October 5 and 6. They start the weekend against the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology at 9am and Santa Clara
University at 2:20pm on day one. They follow that up with
games against California State-Maritime at 12:00pm and Concordia
University at 5:20pm on the final day.
